Mauritius welcomes the first wave of tourists after lifting quarantine restrictions

Today, the Republic of Mauritius formally reopened its frontiers, loosening restrictions for fully vaccinated travellers. From the minute they land in Mauritius, tourists will be able to openly discover and experience the island’s idyllic beaches, mountains, waterfalls, and lagoons.

Mauritius is among the world’s most successful countries regarding its Covid-19 countermeasures, with an average of 83 percent of the island’s adult population now receiving two jabs of covid-19 vaccines. International travelers are coming to Mauritius for its breathtaking landscape, stability, and safety.

As the first airplanes with tourists on-board landed at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam international airport today, there have been cheerful celebrations to welcome them. “This is a fantastic day for Mauritius island, and we are thrilled to be able to welcome travellers back to our wonderful nation,” said the Deputy Prime Minister Steven Obeegadoo, who was present on-site to greet the visitors. We can confidently lift restrictions today thanks to the governments global best practices strategy of vaccinating our population first before fully reopening the island.

“International tourism is an essential part of the Mauritian economy, but so is the citizens health and wellbeing, and thanks to our approach regarding covid-19, we are able to reopen our borders to international travellers today as planned due to the government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Right at the beginning of the pandemic, Mauritius rapidly and efficiently responded to the threat of Covid-19. The government was  able to keep infection rates exceptionally low by instituting an early lockdown and rigorous quarantine measures, so we were able to put our gradual reopening plan in place right on schedule by focusing the vaccination of our tourism professionals alongside healthcare personnel.”

“Tourism contributes about more than 25% of our country’s GDP and employs many thousands of individuals be it directly and indirectly, so we are extremely delighted to welcome visitors to our island at the start of the high season,” said Nilen Vencadasmy, chairman of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA). To ensure the well-being of our population, it was essential that we adopt strict health regulations, and we continue to remain attentive in making sure that all required protection measures are in place to protect travelers and the local community.

“I am convinced that every one of our committed tourism professionals in the industry will be delighted to see tourists returning to our Mauritius.”

Mauritius hotels and airline bookings have skyrocketed in the last few weeks, prompting the inclusion of more international commercial flights to satisfy the demands. British Airways, Emirates, Air France, South African Airways, Air Austral, Air Seychelles, Turkish Airlines, Keyan Airways, Edelweiss, Austrian Airlines, and Mauritius’s national flag carrier Air Mauritius are just some of the handful of major airlines that fly to Mauritius.
