Mauritius has 18 private clinics and 11 specialized centres that provide paid medical services. Patients usually subscribe to medical insurance plans that offer various coverage options. Expatriates from France can access social security benefits through the Caisse des Français à l’Étranger with approved private health institutions in Mauritius. Pharmacies are also numerous on the island.

Medical Professionals and Regulation

Mauritius’ healthcare system is supported by qualified local and international doctors trained at reputable medical universities abroad. Medical institutions in Mauritius also employ foreign medical practitioners across a range of specialities. The Medical profession is regulated by the Medical Council of Mauritius, ensuring that healthcare practices meet the highest international quality and standards.

Vaccinations and Disease Control

• Yellow Fever: Vaccination is not compulsory for individuals from Europe, North America, Oceania, or Asia.
• Malaria: There is no risk of malaria in Mauritius.
• Residency Permits: Applicants for Occupation Permits and Residence Permits are required to undergo medical tests and examinations as part of their application process.

Medical Tests Required for Permit Applicants

All non-citizens must complete the following tests:

1. Blood Tests:
   • Haemoglobin and Full Blood Count
   • Hepatitis B Surface Antigen
   • Anti-HIV Screening Test for AIDS
   • VDRL Test
2. Urine and Stool Tests:
   • Albumin and Sugar (Urine)
   • Parasites (Stool)
3. Chest X-ray
4. Additional Tests:
   • Lymphatic Filariasis and Leprosy Tests (restricted to specific nationalities)

Mandatory Local Tests in Mauritius:

• Hepatitis B Surface Antigen
• HIV Test
• Chest X-ray

These tests must be conducted in Mauritius and can be completed at any private local medical laboratory or clinic registered with the Ministry of Health and Wellness. The remaining tests may be done in the applicant’s home country or Mauritius.

Key Considerations:

• Test results should be reviewed by a local doctor who will issue the necessary medical certificate.
• No application will be accepted if the applicant has a contagious disease.
• Tests must be conducted within six months before submitting the application.
• A radiologist must sign the chest X-ray.
• Children below 12 years must submit a Medical Certificate after a clinical examination. Additional tests are only required if the doctor deems them necessary.
