Residence Permit for Spouse of a Mauritius Citizen
If you are a non-citizen married to a Mauritius citizen, you can apply for a residence permit under Section 5(1)(c) of the Immigration Act. Below is the detailed procedure for both male and female applicants seeking a residence permit as the spouse of a Mauritian citizen.
Documents Required for Male Spouse:
- Application form to enter Mauritius: Completed and signed by the applicant.
- Wife’s Birth Certificate and National ID: Must prove the wife is a citizen of Mauritius and has not renounced her citizenship.
- Passport-sized Photos: Two recent photos of the applicant and any dependents (if applicable).
- Full Birth Certificate of Applicant: Must be legalized/authenticated by the relevant authorities or bear the Apostille seal of the Hague Convention (if applicable).
- Marriage Certificate: If the marriage occurred outside Mauritius, the certificate must be legalized/authenticated or bear the Apostille seal.
- Divorce Decree: If applicable, both parties must provide this.
- Death Certificate of Ex-spouse: If applicable, along with the previous marriage certificate.
- Recent Police Clearance: A certificate of character or police clearance, less than six months old, from the applicant’s country of origin and residence.
- Letter from Mauritius Citizen Spouse: The wife must provide a letter confirming her support for the application and confirming her Mauritian citizenship status. If she has any foreign nationality, the relevant certificate must be provided.
- Passport Photocopy: Bio-data pages of the applicant’s passport and that of any dependents.
- Children’s Birth Certificates: If children were born abroad, their birth certificates must be legalized/authenticated or bear the Apostille seal.
- Proof of Financial Means: Recent bank statements or payslips from Mauritius that prove one’s financial capability to support oneself and the family.

Important Notes:
- Application Form: The prescribed form, “Application to Enter Mauritius”, can be obtained from the Passport and Immigration Office.
- Original Documents: All documents must be submitted in original with two (2) copies. Originals will be returned after verification, except the police clearance certificate, which the office will keep.
