The Self-Employed Occupation Permit is designed for freelancers looking to relocate to Mauritius, a tropical haven with excellent telecommunication networks. This permit enables professionals to offer services to local and international clients while enjoying a high-quality lifestyle.

Key Features of the Permit

  • Minimum Investment: USD 35,000 in professional activity
  • Permit Validity: 10 years, renewable
  • Application Fee: USD 1,000 upon approval
  • Renewal Criteria: Annual business income of MUR 800,000 from the third year of registration

How to Qualify for the Residency by Investment Program

Applicants must invest at least USD 35,000 and provide two letters of intent from potential clients.

Application Process

The application process is fully online, accessible through the National Electronic Licensing System. You don’t need to be physically present in Mauritius to start the process.

Once approved, you’ll be eligible to open a bank account in Mauritius and transfer the required investment amount of USD 35,000. This transfer is necessary for the issuance of the Occupation Permit.

Setting Up a Business in Mauritius

To set up your business, you must register with the Corporate and Business Registration Department (CBRD), which offers a one-stop shop for business incorporation.

Property Acquisition and Family Residency

Foreign nationals under this permit can acquire residential property under the Integrated Resort Scheme (IRS), Real Estate Scheme (RES), Property Development Scheme (PDS), or Smart City Scheme (SCS). Additionally, apartments in buildings with at least ground plus two floors can be purchased.

The permit allows your dependents—spouse, parents, and unmarried children—to apply for residence permits, enabling them to live in Mauritius for the same duration as your permit.

Renewal and Permanent Residency

You can renew your permit after 10 years, provided your annual business income reaches MUR 800,000 from the third year onwards. Additionally, you may apply for a 20-year Permanent Residence Permit after three years of residency if your annual business income is at least MUR 3 million for three consecutive years before the application.
